NORTH RENOVATION COMPLETE!

The renovation at our North location in Berkeley is finished! (Well, almost — we’re waiting for Spring to do landscaping and some other outside work). Pictured above is a partial view of the new lunchroom for our workers. Inside you will see a picture of one of the new restrooms (there are 4 in total!), along with a view of the new employee entrance and some of the new lockers (Every employee will have a new locker!). Brian Kamp of Wachter, Inc.(our General Contractor) and his superintendent, Mike Byers, along with our stellar Project Manager, Norm Steinman of CCS Group, did a fantastic job, and kept our best interests at the forefront at all times. We also created a new “clean” work room, revamped the front offices and conference  room, created a Staff break room, and painted the whole shop. Outside, we put on a new roof, replaced the rotting retaining wall with a masonry one, and created a new entrance for our workers.

We owe a debt of gratitude to the taxpayers of St. Louis County and the Productive Living Board for funding the project, as well as to our private donors who help us fit out the new lunch room. I will let everyone know when we will have our official “grand opening”, as we want to host it in warm weather so all can come!

Thanks again for your support, and as always, I’ll see you at the shop!

ODDS ‘N’ ENDS

1)      I-Pod’s /CD players: As a reminder, the policy is that:  1) these can only be worn during work with good cause, approved by Harry or Jerry; 2) that can be used otherwise only at break or lunch; 3) they are the responsibility of the individual, not Lafayette.  We suggest you put their name on it so that it won’t scratch off or rub off.  This way if it gets lost, we will have the best chance of identifying the owner.

2)      Do **not** bring big bills - no $10’s and no $20’s.  We have a machine that gives golden dollars as change, and it only takes $5 bills and $1 bills.  Also, if you bring larger bills, it’s easy for someone to make off with the money if you bring it.  So please don’t.  Staff, parents and guardians - please be sure to double-check before they head out the door!!

3)      St. Louis Cardinals Baseball Game:  Please put the date for the yearly Cardinals game we go to on your summer calendar (yes, winter will be gone one of these days).  On Friday, July 30th, we will head downtown to our usual outing at Busch Stadium.  We will be in the outfield loge boxes around the general vicinity of where we were last year.  Becky S. says that this is only to let you know the date, so please, please, please no questions about when tickets are coming or when they’ll be assigned, etc.  She doesn’t know at this point!  We just wanted to let you know when the game would be.

4)      If you have some smaller size pants that you can give to Lafayette, we really need those.  We have people of all sizes, but what we are particularly in need of right now are the smaller size pants.  So go through your wardrobes, and ladies, time to face the music.  If you have hips that will never see that smaller size again, then we can help ease your heartbreak by taking those seemingly teeny-tiny pants off your hands.  They will be put to good use.

5)      This is for every single one of the employees - if you have an address change please notify Janet at 636-227-5666, x1104, in the accounting office.  We will have address change forms at the front desk if you need one to write down the change.  If your telephone number changes, we can use that information as well.  Keeping accurate information is extremely important.

FLU SHOTS GIVEN BY VISITING NURSE ASSOCIATION

Far left:  Rob takes his standard flu vaccine like a man.

Immediate left:  B. J. Burns takes one in the arm for swine flu.

This year Lafayette did something new for its employees.  This year they offered both free flu vaccines and free H1N1 flu vaccines  The shots were given by the Visiting Nurse Association.  Quite a few people decided to take the standard flu vaccine.  Then when the H1N1 flu vaccine became available, about 150 people from Lafayette North and Lafayette West decided to take it.  As you can tell from the pictures above, some folks took the shot better than others.  This was the editor’s first year ever taking any flu shot, period.  Though she is like many who really hate and am scared of needles, it went well without too much pain, and it was over with quickly.  From Mr. Libera’s reaction, we can tell from his expression how that one went.  Thank you, Lafayette, for providing us with free flu shots!  Thank you to everyone who took one in the arm for Lafayette!

JEANNE TESCHNER - A CARING FRIEND                              By Janet Pritchett

Editorial note:  Jeanne Teschner’s husband, John, has been a long-time member of the Board of Directors.  They were one of the original folks that worked on getting a workshop started in West County, and they were active in Lafayette’s many activities for years.  Jeanne passed away suddenly last week, and we are paying tribute to her years of service to Lafayette.

It wasn’t long after I started with Lafayette Industries that I met Jeanne.  She had this friendliness that made it easy to connect with her.  Any time Jeanne was in the office she would make it a point to stop by and chat with the office staff.  As time went on, we found things to talk about and got to know each other.  Later, she joined some of the staff on get togethers socially.  This became a regular event that she would join the group from the office and have an evening out with the girls.  We always found a reason to go out - mostly to celebrate someone’s birthday or just for fun.  Jeanne was always ready to go out with the girls.  She would bring a gift to the person celebrating their birthday, and occasionally she had a gift for everyone.  She thoroughly enjoyed being part of the girls and everyone welcomed her as well.

Jeanne was there for me when I was going through some health issues.  Her support and prayers helped me through that time in my life.  I will miss Jeanne.  I am saddened by the loss of my friend.

VALENTINE DINNER DANCE                             By Wayne and Gloria Marek

What a great turnout for the Valentine Dinner/Dance!  Even the threat of snow didn’t dissuade our largest group ever from attending.  One of the highlights of the evening is the annual crowning of the King and Queen which everyone awaits with nervous anticipation. When Adam Stallman was named King, he jumped up with a big smile and accepted his crown.  Queen Beth Goodwin was all smiles as well.  The King and Queen took a turn on the dance floor before being joined by their “royal subjects.”  D. J. Linda Lipka kept everyone “pumped” and dancing.  Some of the first-time volunteers were impressed by the dancing abilities shown by the Lafayette employees. We sent out photos to LWC Auxiliary members who have signed up for e-mail.  If you are a member and would like to be added to our e-mail list, please contact us at lwcaux@aol.com.  A very special thanks to those parents who stayed to help clean up and put away the tables and chairs.

Spread out - I got moves!
